What solid wood panels are

Solid wood panels are made from narrow laminations bonded along their edges. The result is a panel product that is nevertheless solid timber throughout — unlike chipboard or fibreboard, where the wood is broken down.

Two distinctions determine price and appearance. First the build-up: in a single-layer panel all laminations lie in one plane and one grain direction. In a three-layer panel a core layer runs across the two face layers — it acts as a brake on movement and makes the panel considerably more stable.

Second the laminations themselves: continuous from edge to edge, or finger jointed along the length. Continuous laminations give the calmer appearance and cost more; finger-jointed ones use shorter offcuts and show the characteristic joint pattern.

Advantages

  • Solid timber appearance in panel form. Continuous grain across large surfaces without having to be cut from one piece.
  • Large formats without distortion, which could not be produced from grown timber.
  • Sandable and oilable. The surface can be refinished again and again — over decades.
  • Repairable. Scratches and dents can be sanded out because there is no veneer beneath.
  • More stable than a glued-up solid board, especially in the three-layer build-up.
  • Wide choice of species and grades, from calm and knot-free to deliberately rustic.
  • Usable exposed, including at the edges — no edge banding needed.

Drawbacks

  • More expensive than chipboard, MDF or laminated panels. For substrates nobody sees, the premium is not worth it.
  • The timber keeps moving. Solid wood panels respond to indoor climate; across the width they must be free to move.
  • Glue lines and finger joints stay visible. More or less depending on grade — worth inspecting before ordering.
  • Moisture sensitive. Without a sealed surface and protected edges the panel swells and cups.
  • Heavy. Large formats are hard to handle alone.
  • Not load-bearing as standard. Structural duties require evidence a furniture panel does not carry.
  • Colour differences between deliveries. Repeat orders do not always match existing stock visually.

Where to avoid solid wood panels

  • Wet areas. Splash water, permanent damp and unprotected edges do not go with solid timber.
  • Outdoors. The bonding of furniture panels is designed for interiors, not for weathering — decking timber belongs there.
  • Invisible substrates. Where chipboard or MDF does the same job, solid timber is wasted money.
  • Rigidly restrained fittings. Take away movement across the width and the panel either splits or pushes the construction apart.
  • Rooms with strongly fluctuating climate, such as rarely heated holiday homes or conservatories.
  • Load-bearing components. That is what glulam, LVL or CLT are for.
